I Run For the Reward

A few weeks ago, I participated in the Clarksburg Country Run in Clarksburg. I also did it last year, but last year I did the 20 miler so by the time I was done, I just wanted to go home and take a nap. But this time, I was only (only, haha) running the half marathon, so I wanted to visit Old Sugar Mill winery while I was already in Clarksburg (located just south of Sacramento). I especially wanted to visit Rendez-vous Winery, Todd Taylor and Clarksburg Wine Company because I had heard so many great things.

The race itself was actually pleasant. It was completely flat and really beautiful through the vineyard in Clarksburg wine country. The day was beautiful too—no rain in sight, though it was pretty cold in the morning before the run got started. I hadn’t really been training, so I didn’t beat my own time, but I got much closer that I thought I would, which made me wish I had trained for it.

We got a hot lunch after the race, which was much appreciated and then my boyfriend and I headed over to Old Sugar Mill for a nice wine tasting reward. Even though I was still a little gross from the half marathon, everyone was pretty casual there on a Sunday afternoon, so I didn’t feel totally out of place. Plus, I saw several other participants in the race there as well.

The first winery we went to was Rendez-vous because we planned on working our way from back to front. We ended up spending a good deal of our time there because in addition to wine, they also had olive oil, jam, and balsamic oil to sample. And because I participated in the race, I got a special chocolate truffle. When we finally got around to trying their wines, we were pretty impressed. Most of what we tried was white wine, but a few of the wines we tasted were red. I think maybe they just specialize in white wine. Either way, it was delicious.

By the time we left Rendez-vous, we didn’t have a lot of time to visit the other wineries. I didn’t mind though, because I felt like I got the experience I was looking for even just having gone to Rendez-vous. We did manage to stop into Todd Taylor for a while. And try some of their wines and they were really good too. By the end of the day, I had run 13.1 miles and bought 4 bottles of wine. Quite a productive day, I must say!

I plan on doing the same thing next year: race, then wine. It was the perfect way to relax and reward myself after a swift race. I am already looking forward to next year.
